On The Runs: Still no name for inquiry judge

The judge leading the inquiry into letters sent to 'On The Runs' is yet to be named.

The judge leading the inquiry into letters sent to 'On The Runs' is yet to be named.

The name of the judge who will lead the inquiry into the Government’s ‘letters of comfort’ to IRA fugitives will be announced “as soon as possible”, the Government has said.

On Thursday, Prime Minister David Cameron announced that a judge would examine the issue and report by the end of May.

Although his report will be published, the inquiry will take place in private and he will not have the power to compel witnesses.

Yesterday the News Letter asked the NIO if the Government had decided on which judge would conduct the inquiry and when his or her review would begin.

An NIO spokeswoman said: “The name of the judge will be announced as soon as possible.

“Details of how the review will be conducted will be for the judge to determine within the terms of reference.”
