Loyal orders and bands in Londonderry are to publish the ‘Maiden City Accord’, a document which outlines and advises organisations on appropriate conduct during parades within the city.
The idea for the document first arose during the monthly meeting of the Londonderry Bands Forum in December 2013.
Various members of the local loyal orders were invited to the meeting where it was decided to create a definitive form of protocol for parading and events.
The document was developed by Londonderry bands forum and its coordinator Derek Moore, senior representatives of the Apprentice Boys of Derry, City of Londonderry Grand Orange Lodge, Royal Black Preceptory and the loyal orders’ safety marshals. It is expected to be implemented locally from December.
The agreement outlines six issues of communication, timing of parades/events, health and safety, dignified parading, behaviour, briefing and reviews. The accord is primarily a local document that will be initially adopted by the Apprentice Boys of Derry for use at all their parades and public events.
Organisers are keen to stress that it will be made publicly available for anyone who wishes to use elements from it to develop their own version.
