A new paramilitary mural under construction in east Belfast sends out “an appalling message” to young people, Trevor Ringland has said.
The NI Conservatives’ co-chairman was commenting after the appearance of the image – depicting two UVF gunmen – on a wall at the junction of Carlingford Street and Ardenvohr Street in the Willowfield area. Mr Ringland said it “evokes a dark and murderous past”, and must be challenged.
“As a society, we have to challenge those who want to glorify paramilitarism robustly,” he said.
Mr Ringland added: “We simply mustn’t allow children to become infected with hatred or dragged into conflict with the law, by people who are still trying to justify a bloody, hopeless past.”
