A pipe bomb device described by police as “viable” has been recovered for forensic examination following a security operation on the outskirts of Londonderry.
The security alert began on Friday in the Braehead Road/Letterkenny Road area. Both roads were closed for several hours and traffic was diverted.
Army experts carried out a controlled explosion on the device.
A police spokeswoman said: “At this stage it is believed to be a viable, small pipe bomb-type device.”
A number of other items have also been removed for further examination.
All of the closed roads were reopened on Friday evening.
