ARSONISTS have left a trail of destruction after targeting a Belfast primary school.
An industrial bin was torched at the back of the building and the flames quickly spread to a fence and the roof.
Three crews with 15 firemen arrived minutes after the blaze started at Braniel Primary School at around 9.30pm on Saturday.
Commander Alan Walmsley said if his men had been at the scene any later the fire could have gutted the school.
"Luckily the flames were reported by a member of the public and we were able to get there before they could take hold," he said.
"If we hadn't arrived so quickly the whole school could have been burnt to the ground."
The fire chief confirmed it was a malicious blaze and blamed vandals for the attack.
