Probation for man who attacked parents

Belfast Crown Court

Belfast Crown Court

A 20-year old man who attacked his mother and father in the bedroom of their Co Antrim home was yesterday placed on two years’ probation.

Belfast Crown Court heard that Martin Leitch, from Carnmoney Road in Newtownabbey, admitted causing grievous bodily harm to his father, resulting in an injury that left his eyeball protruding from its socket.

Leitch also admitted assaulting his mother during the incident, by grabbing her around the neck.

Crown prosecutor Gary McCrudden said the attack took place at Leitch’s parents home in the Mossley area of Newtownabbey in the early hours of April 25 last year, after Leitch and several friends had spent the previous evening drinking in the house.

A defence lawyer said Leitch was “thoroughly ashamed of what happened that night”.
