The heated row that has rocked a church congregation in Co Down is set to escalate this weekend with further protest activity planned.
Two weeks ago around 40 members of Ballynahinch Congregational – who had been calling for the minister, the Rev George Speers, to stand down – got up and walked out of a service.
The dispute, over a number of issues including Biblical teachings, has been simmering for a number of years but tensions came to a head earlier this month.
PSNI officers have maintained a presence during the last two Sunday services.
Church trustee Samuel Graham said the campaign to remove the Rev Speers will continue.
“There definitely will be some form of walkout this weekend but there is another type of protest taking place – there will be something very visual – but I don’t want to say any more,” he said. “Again, we pray that everything will be within the law and there will be no disturbing the peace.”
In a statement following last week’s protest, the Rev Speers said he had attempted to bring about a resolution through internal church structures.
“I will not be deterred from preaching the Gospel by the illegal actions of a group of protestors,” he said.
