Racer dies after Dundrod crash

Lee Vernon

Lee Vernon

THE rider injured during the Dundrod 150 road race meeting near Lisburn on Thursday has died in hospital.

Lee Vernon, from Stoke-on-Trent, was taking part in the Super-bike race when the accident happened.

The 24-year-old rider was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast but on Friday night the Dundrod and District Motorcycle Club confirmed his death.

In a statement, clerk of the course Noel Johnston said he was “deeply saddened” by the news.

Mr Johnston paid tribute to the young rider, saying: “He first came to Dundrod as an 18-year-old novice and has been back every year since. He was a lovely lad and a credit to the sport and to his family.

He will be sorely missed.”

Lee’s family have asked that their privacy is respected to give them time to come to terms with what has happened.
