An independent group has made 14 recommendations into how Roads Service treat roads over the winter.
Transport Minister Danny Kennedy said one of the key recommendations was that the winter service fleet replacement programme continues to be prioritised.
The minister said: “My department has recently bought 12 new gritters at a cost of £900,000 which will be incorporated into our current fleet of 132.”
Mr Kennedy said that an action plan has been prepared to deal with the recommendations.
He has existing arrangements with 24 councils to make salt and grit available to help clear the ice and snow from designated town and city centre footways, he said.
He has now written again to the councils seeking their continued support.
