Royal Baby: Flag flies at City Hall but not Stormont

The Union flag flies above Belfast City Hall to mark the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's new son.

The Union flag is being flown over the City Hall today to mark the birth of the royal baby - but the flag is not flying at Stormont.

The quirk, described as a “mish mash over flag flying” by one Twitter user, comes about because council buildings including the City Hall are governed by different legislation to the Assembly.

Stormont is governed by the Flags (NI) Order 2000 which provides for 15 designated days, while the flag flies at City Hall on 18 specific dates set out by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport in Westminster.

Instructions from the department to the city council stated the flag should be flown on Tuesday, following the announcement that Kate had given birth on Monday evening.

A spokesperson said: “Following the announcement of the birth of a son to their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, UK government buildings should fly the Union Flag at full mast from 8am until 8pm, today, Tuesday, 23 July 2013.”

A representative for Belfast City Council said it is assumed July 22 - the new Prince’s birthday - will be the designated day from now on.

John NI tweeted: “It would seem NI is a bit of a miss mash over flag flying for the new royal birth flying at city hall but not at Stormont!”

A spokesperson at Stormont said the Assembly Commission will meet on September 25 to discuss a review and consultation over possible changes to the days on which the flag flies.

After protests following the vote to restrict the number of days the flag is flown at the City Hall, a number of Unionist politicians said the differing situations for the two buildings was “ridiculous”.
