The North West 200 takes place in May.

One political party has announced its intention not to erect election posters on the North West 200 route after safety concerns were raised by the event’s organiser.

Mervyn Whyte has expressed concerns over the positioning of posters, often on hardwood backing, along the route where bikers travel at speeds of up to 180mph.

An Ulster Unionist Party spokesman said: “We have already made the decision that the Ulster Unionist Party will not be erecting posters along the route of the North West 200. We wish the organisers, competitors and bike fans every success and hope they enjoy a great week’s racing.”

The NW200 runs from May 10 to 17.

Election posters have already been banned from the Giro d’Italia route next month between May 8 and 11.
