AN investigation is underway after an off-duty police officer fired shots at in Omagh, on Friday night.

A PSNI spokesperson said no-one was injured during the incident in the Coolnagard area, which has been referred to the Police Ombudsman.

During a follow-up search police also discovered a suspicious device.

West Tyrone MLA Declan McAleer said local residents had been evacuated from their homes.

“Most have opted to stay with family or friends until it is deemed safe to return.

“I spoke to several of the evacuated residents and they are very concerned that such a sinister incident involving the discharge of a firearm and a suspicious device has taken place in their community.

“I am therefore relieved that no one has been hurt or injured in this incident.

The MLA said Coolnagard was a very quiet residential area of the town with a mixed community.

“The investigation is still ongoing so I await further details from the PSNI as to the exact nature of the events which unfolded here on Friday night,” Mr McAleer added.
