A senior PSNI officer has been appointed expert adviser to a European Parliament committee on organised crime.
Assistant Chief Constable (ACC) Drew Harris will sit on a panel advising the Special Committee on Organised Crime, Corruption and Money Laundering.
Mr Harris gave evidence to the committee this week on the importance of intelligence in UK policing and beyond.
“Intelligence is a commodity, one which is only useful when shared. The gathering of intelligence is not, and should not be, an end in itself but rather it should lead to criminal justice being served in terms of tackling the perpetrators of organised crime,” he said.
“I hope the experience and expertise which the Police Service of Northern Ireland has gained in tackling organised criminality in all its forms and in a wide variety of locations will be of benefit to the committee’s understanding of these challenging issues.”
Mr Harris was nominated to serve on the committee by Ulster Unionist MEP Jim Nicholson.
Mr Nicholson said: “This has been a terrific opportunity for Northern Ireland to share expertise.
“Our experiences of fighting criminality in the province have been many and varied; we have a world-class police force in the PSNI and I am very pleased to be able to welcome ACC Harris to Brussels. Organised crime is a local problem but the solutions are international.”
