Hundreds of Co Armagh Orangemen are expected to turn out at a service this Sunday afternoon to commemorate the Battle of the Diamond which led to the formation of the Orange Order in 1795.
The annual Diamond anniversary service, taking place at Diamond Orange Hall, beside the site of the battle, has been organised by three Loughgall District lodges – St Aidan’s True Blues, Kilmore LOL 35, Diamond Memorial LOL 85 and Diamond Grange LOL 118.
These lodges were formed with the issuing of warrants on the day of the September 21, 1795 battle.
The “skirmish” was between the Roman Catholic Defenders and the Protestants of the area.
When it ended, the Protestants formed a circle, joined hands and declared their brotherhood.
