A neighbour who saw a man lying on the ground after a vicious assault in Belfast yesterday said he was “left in a terrible way” after witnessing the aftermath.
Daniel Madden was in a stable condition in the Ulster Hospital yesterday afternoon after the attack in his girlfriend’s house in the Short Strand area, in which another man was also injured.
A neighbour told the News Letter he heard shouts and arrived at the house to see Daniel lying “covered in blood”.
“There was blood everywhere, all through the house as well,” he said.
“I thought they had been stabbed to death. It looked like it was chocolate on his (Daniel’s) face, I have never seen blood like that. I didn’t recognise him, his face was destroyed.”
Family members released a picture of Daniel showing the injuries to his head and face.
A police spokesman said two men aged 26 and 34 were seriously assaulted in the Comber Court area in the early hours of yesterday morning, requiring hospital treatment for head injuries.
“A man aged 51 has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody helping police with their inquiries,” he said.
