The owner of a discount shop has been fined a total of £1,800 in relation to three food hygiene offences.

Poundstretcher Ltd, which owns the Poundstretcher outlet at Connswater Shopping Centre, was also ordered to pay court costs of £75 over the incidents.

The prosecution was brought by Belfast City Council following a routine inspection of their premises on February 14 last year, during which environmental health staff had found hygiene conditions throughout the premises to be unsatisfactory.

The council said yesterday that the inspection had uncovered fresh mice droppings and a strong smell of urine, as well as two dead mice, and that foodstuffs were found not to have been protected from risk of contamination.

It added that procedures critical to food safety were found to be inadequate.

The shop was also found to not be pest-proof.

A court heard that a remedial action notice was served to prohibit the use of storage areas at the shop, and was lifted on March 11 after three consecutive days of no pest activity and all pest proofing work completed.

The council said yesterday that the hygiene conditions in the premises have subsequently been improved to the authority’s satisfaction.
