The family pressure was firmly on Ulster Unionist Euro candidate Jim Nicholson as son Sam sailed safely home in the Armagh DEA of the new Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon supercouncil.
Nicholson junior – an architect in the Cathedral City – made it in on the fourth count and joked with his dad: “Keep it in the family.”
But there was a tinge of sadness as Sam’s victory followed the elimination of respected UUP colleague Joy Rollston.
Nicholson senior – the great Brussels survivor – was quietly confident that Monday’s EU count would fall in his favour.
“You can’t be totally certain in politics, but the UUP has done really well in the local elections and hopefully it will be a marker in the Euro stakes.”
Mr Nicholson has been one of NI’s three MEPs since 1989.
