Sports stars Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki ensured 2013 finished on a high by announcing their engagement.
In a sign of the times, the couple became the latest to spread their happy news via Twitter, with the duo posting matching pictures of themselves with a ring.
Northern Irish golfer and current world number six McIlroy told his more than 1.8 million followers: “Happy New Year everyone! I have a feeling it’s going to be a great year!! My first victory of 2014 #shesaidyes!!”
Danish tennis player Wozniacki, who is also in her sport’s top 10 according to the latest rankings, also took to Twitter, saying: “Happy New Year everyone! Rory and I started 2014 with a bang! ... I said YES!!!!”
The couple’s relationship was the subject of intense media scrutiny as recently as October 2013 when there were strong rumours of a split.
The speculation began after Caroline posted an unflattering photo of her boyfriend online – showing Rory sleeping with his mouth open which was said to have annoyed the 24-year-old Holywood golfer.
After a spell when the pair uncharacteristically refrained from posting public messages on Twitter, Rory used the site to deny there had been a falling out.
A month later the pair were pictured looking happy together at a golf tournament in Dubai.
Apart from the engagement, 2013 will not be remembered as one of their finest years by either of the sports superstars.
Rory’s fortunes took a downturn when he failed to impress at successive tournaments following a multi-million pound switch to Nike golf clubs, and he became embroiled in court action with his former Dublin-based management company.
It was October before Caroline won her first tournament of the year - the Luxembourg Open - with Rory eventually securing his first victory at the Australian Open on December 1.
Bookmakers are already quoting odds on where and when the couple will marry, whether Rory can secure another major before the nuptials, and who will design the wedding dress. Designers Monique Lhullier at 5/1 and Vera Wang at 6/1 are the two front runners to get the prestigious job with Jenny Packham next in line at 8/1.
Paddy Power is offering only 2/1 they will tie the knot in Ireland - and a wedding in 2015 is seen as odds on favourite.
Other bets being taken include whether they will sell the photograph rights of their big day to Hello magazine, and when the duo will have a baby.
