Suspicious object in Ballymoney was pipe bomb

Police say that a suspicious object which caused homes to be evacuated in Ballymoney was a viable pipe bomb.

A number of homes were evacuated and army bomb experts were tasked to the scene.

The Kilraghts Road into Ballymoney, the Ballymena Road in both directions and the Glarryduff Road to the Ballymena Road were closed and motorists were advised to avoid the area.

However by 3pm police reported that the roads had been reopened, residents allowed home and the device taken away for examination.

A PSNI spokeswoman said the object was a viable pipe bomb.
