Thousands mark UVF centenary in west Belfast

Thousands of loyalists paraded along the Shankill Road yesterday in a spectacle of colour to mark the 100th anniversary of the formation of the UVF in west Belfast.

A century ago at Fernhill House in the Glencairn area of Belfast, Unionist leader Edward Carson inspected members of the west Belfast section of the Ulster Volunteer Force.

Saturday’s parade was a re-enactment of one of the key events during the home rule crisis with the UVF being formed to resist Ireland becoming self governing and many of the members going on to fight in

the First World War.
