An Ulster Unionist council candidate who was rebuked by Ballymena United Football Club for using its name in his promotional literature has put the incident down to his “exuberance”.

Brian Thompson, 58, whose company has a marketing contract with the club, told the News Letter that he had been a supporter of the club for decades and “maybe it was a bit exuberant on my part after they got in the Irish Cup final for the first time in 25 years”.

The club had issued a statement saying it was “disappointed” that Mr Thompson had used its name in his literature.

The club said: “Ballymena United is disappointed to discover that its name has been used by its sales and marketing executive Brian Thompson on election literature he has distributed in a bid to become an Ulster Unionist Party councillor.”

It added that the club was non-political and “does not wish to be seen to be associated with any individual political party or grouping”.
