A suspicious object found in south Belfast was a viable explosive, police confirmed.

A security alert, which began at around 7.30pm on Sunday evening in Donegall Avenue ended after midnight on Monday.

Police said Army bomb experts had recovered a “viable, explosive-type device” and taken that and “other related material” away for further examination.

The train line between Adelaide and Great Victoria Street was closed during the alert. It has since re-opened.
