Kathryn Stone has said that her personal view of whether the IRA were terrorists is “irrelevant”.
In a letter to the News Letter, which you can read by clicking here, Ms Stone also pledged her continuing support for all victims and survivors.
The commissioner acknowledged the deep hurt caused by violence, but said: “It is not my role to make legal or political statements or judgments about innocence or guilt; about whether the Peace Building and Conflict Resolution Centre should go ahead or not; or whether the Special Advisers Bill should proceed or not. Those decisions are for politicians.”
She adds: “With regard to the IRA and UVF, these are proscribed organisations and of course neither I nor the commission would support unlawful organisations.”
