Alliance European election candidate Anna Lo has said that her strong performance for the party may partly be down to her comments about a united Ireland and the Alliance role in restricting the flying of the Union Flag on Belfast City Hall.

The South Belfast MLA polled 44,432 first preference votes in the election, a 7.1% share of the vote, up from 5.5% of the vote which the then Alliance candidate Ian Parsley got in 2009.

A surprisingly high number of Alliance transfers went to the SDLP’s Alex Attwood (24,675), rather than to the UUP’s Jim Nicholson (6,959).

A delighted Ms Lo told the News Letter that Alliance would “build on” the support which it has won and that as a cross-community party it would work for all voters, regardless of their background.
