Ahead of today’s first engagement, Royal supporters bedecked the railings outside the Crumlin Road’s old courthouse with red, white and blue.

By 9am, rafts of flag-waving onlookers had congregated there as well, to try and catch a glimpse of the arrival of the Queen and Prince Philip.

The couple embarked on a roughly 30 minute tour of the decommissioned, Lanyon-designed prison, and afterwards the 88-year-old monarch briefly greeted guests in the courtyard before being waved off as she left in a convoy, while broadcasters filed their reports for local radio and TV channels.
