Many parts of Northern Ireland were hit by heavy snow on Wednesday morning, as the prolonged wintry spell looks set to continue into the weekend.

There were reports of heavy snow in some parts of Co Down and Co Fermanagh while traffic was brought to a standstill in Cookstown.

Many roads in the Magherafelt and the rural Mid Ulster areas were also badly affected by the lying snow.

Weather forecasters say the cold snap will continue into the weekend and an early warning has been issued for heavy rain on Friday.
