UUP leader Mike Nesbitt has said that his party has begun to climb back after its vote increased from the 2011 council election.

The Strangford MLA claimed that the election of Sonia Copeland, who polled strongly in east Belfast, changed the dynamic for next year’s Westminster fight for the East Belfast seat.

Mr Nesbitt said that the UUP had “clearly bottomed out” and added: “The bad years of pain for the Ulster Unionist Party are over.”

Mr Nesbitt, Cllr Copeland and veteran party councillor Jim Rodgers spoke to the News Letter in Belfast City Hall.
