A pensioner has been shot in the chest while he worked in a shed in Co Antrim.

A masked gunman fired at the 74-year old during an incident in Ballycastle on Thursday night. He is in a stable condition in hospital, police said.

A PSNI spokesman said: “Police are treating this incident as attempted murder.”

The shooting happened in the Islandboy Road area shortly before 9pm. Detectives appealed for anybody with information to contact them.

UUP North Antrim MLA Robin Swann condemned the shooting.

“This is a truly shocking incident which one simply doesn’t associate with a quiet town like Ballycastle and I would appeal for anyone who has any information whatsoever to pass that on to the police immediately in order that the person responsible for this incident is apprehended as soon as possible.”
