Part of a road in Co Down has collapsed while elsewhere a number of schools have been closed in counties Tyrone and Londonderry as a result of bad weather.

Roads Service confirmed part of the Rostrevor Road in Warrenpoint has collapsed, although they added that the extent of the damage will not be known until the tide goes out later on Wednesday.

Police warned the road is impassable and advised motorists to use the diversions through Mayobridge. Drivers of heavy Goods Vehicles are advised to use the diversion through Rathfriland.

A police spokesman said motorists should continue to drive with due caution. A yellow warning is in place until 7am on Thursday.

The road is closed and police have advised motorists to find alternative routes.

Up to 10cm of snow could fall on ground above 330m in Northern Ireland, according to the Met Office. Gales of up to 60 miles per hour are expected later on Wednesday.

A Road Service warning on Thursday morning said: “Drivers should exercise caution, prepare for the expected driving conditions and leave more time for journeys. Where possible, Roads Service would encourage road users to use public transport.”
