Video: Security alerts at Lurgan and Holywood schools

Waiting for Video...

Two schools are at the centre of security alerts on Friday.

Police said Sloan Street in Lurgan is closed after a suspicious object was discovered near Ceara Special School.

Nearby Carrick Primary School has also been closed.

Elsewhere in Holywood a nursery school was closed after the discovery of a suspicious object at Church Road - later declared an elaborate hoax.

Ulster Unionist MLA Danny Kinahan, vice-Chair of the Stormont Education committee, said the locations of the alerts are “outrageous”.

“I am absolutely disgusted that anyone should target schools as has happened this morning in Lurgan and Holywood,” he said.

“It is bad enough that anyone should seek to cause disruption by planting devices, but to do so in the proximity of schools is simply outrageous.

“Children are upset, their routines are disrupted and parents have to make alternative arrangements.

“Whoever is responsible for these incidents needs to be caught and punished by the courts. The vast majority of people in this society simply want to bring up their children and live their lives in peace with their neighbours and they are perfectly entitled to do so.

“I urge anyone who can help the police to catch those responsible for these alerts to come forward immediately.”
