There is still a firm commitment to fund and build the A5 road project between Londonderry and Aughnacloy in Co Tyrone, according to a Fine Gael TD.

Donegal North East TD Joe McHugh, who is co-chair of the British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly, made the comments during a visit to Northern Ireland after an invite from NI21’s Basil McCrea and John McCallister.

A public consultation on the special areas of conservation along the proposed A5 route will begin in April.

Mr McHugh said the Irish Government still has a commitment of £25m in its 2015 budget, and he added that he believes there is still a commitment at Stormont also.
