A female shopper sustained a head injury during an attempted robbery at a shopping centre in Downpatrick today.

The incident happened in a shopping centre in the Lower Market Street area of the Co Down town just before 9.30am.

A PSNI spokesman said the woman “was approached by an unknown male who attempted to wrestle her handbag from her”.

He added: “During the struggle the woman sustained a head injury and an injury to her arm. She has been taken to hospital for treatment to her injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.”

He said it was not clear how her injuries were sustained.

“The male left empty handed,” he added.

Detectives would ask anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact them at Downpatrick on the non emergency number 101. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.

SDLP Councillor Colin McGrath said: “It appears that this attack was against a woman who was going about her business at the local Post Office.

“This type of attack in such a public place and during the day time in our Main Street is extremely worrying and totally reckless. My thoughts are with the victim and her family at this difficult time.”
