A 23-year-old woman was subjected to a serious sexual assault when she was attacked by three men while walking along the Bell Steele Road area of Poleglass in west Belfast at around 10.10pm on Friday.
She was approached from behind, forced on to a grass bank close to the Woodside Estate where she was held down and sexually assaulted, police said.
Police have appealed for witnesses.
West Belfast Sinn Féin councillor Charlene O’Hara said those responsible must be caught as soon as possible.
“First and foremost the thoughts of the community are with the victim who has suffered this dreadful ordeal,” said Ms O’Hara. “I would call on anyone with any information whatsoever to contact the PSNI so that the culprits can be taken off the streets.
“I would also appeal to women to remain vigilant and to make sure they are accompanied when travelling at night until those responsible are arrested.
“This has shocked the local community who will not feel safe until the perpetrators are apprehended.”
