A man died in a one-car accident in the very early hours of yesterday morning on the outskirts of a Co Antrim town.

The red Citroen C2 in which he was travelling, along with two others, left the road near Ballyclare not long before 1.30am.

Three ambulances attended, but one man died at the scene. Two others were taken to hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

He was named locally as Saul Curler, the 21-year-old son of auto dealer Frank Curler, from the outskirts of Newtownabbey.

Paul Girvan, DUP MLA for South Antrim, said: “I’ve known the family for a long time, and our thoughts and prayers are with them.

“We just hope and pray they get some solace, but it’s not an easy one.”

He said his understanding of the incident on the Doagh Road is that the car was travelling from the village of Doagh towards the town and that just ahead of the graveyard it left the road, went through a hedge and into a field.

The PSNI said it was not yet confirmed who had been driving and they were appealed for witnesses to the incident.

To contact the Collision Investigation Unit at Steeple police station, telephone the PSNI’s non-emergency number, 101.
