Respect due to lord mayor over debate

BRIAN Moorhead is totally incorrect in his letter (August 22) to assert that Gavin Robinson was wrong to attend a Gay Pride event this year and he is also totally out of sync with current politics if he thinks the DUP have remotely softened their religious positions.

Admittedly I am no fan of the DUP, nor do I find the lord mayor, Alderman Robinson, to hold particularly uplifting views about the LGBT community and marriage equality.

However, I will give huge respect and credit to him for being the first member of the DUP to attend a Gay Pride event where the audience isn’t exactly friendly to right-wing, religiously zealous political parties.

Instead of Brian speaking for Gavin Robinson, as if he has authority to speak on his behalf, I would like to see a public statement from our lord mayor confirming or denying his positions on the LGBT community so as to settle any misconceptions.

Brian Moorhead’s letter claims that to host a Gay Pride parade brings shame on the city.

I would say quite the opposite by stipulating that any city which has the courage to host a Gay Pride parade is setting a precedent for equality all around us in Northern Ireland.

Brian Moorhead would be best off following Christian teachings of love, acceptance, tolerance, friendship and compassion.
