The world’s number one golfer Rory McIlroy took his coveted Claret Jug to Old Trafford to show football fans during the half-time interval in Manchester United’s Premier League opener against Swansea on Saturday.

The 25-year-old, who grew up in Holywood, Co Down, has enjoyed a summer of success as he won his first Open Championship at Hoylake in July.

He followed up his Open success by winning the US PGA Championship at Valhalla in recent weeks.
