One of the first people to offer congratulations to the new Open champion was a former nursery school buddy of Rory McIlroy — DUP councillor Stephen Dunne.

Cllr Dunne, 25, said it was yet another magnificent achievement for the down-to-earth golfing superstar.

“I am absolutely delighted at Rory’s magnificent triumph at the Open. It is yet another magnificent achievement and I would like to commend Rory on winning this special title in such spectacular fashion.

“The Open is golf’s most prestigious and coveted title and I am absolutely thrilled that the Open is coming home to Holywood. Holywood is becoming used to major golfing success in recent years but I think this latest success tops all previous triumphs by Rory.”

Cllr Dunne said the local community was revelling in the success of “a fantastic ambassador” and added: “There is a real sense of pride at this latest accolade, and I know how proud the people of Holywood and north Down are of Rory. Rory and his family are held in very high regard locally and he has certainly helped put his hometown on the world map.

“I have no doubt we can look forward to even more magical moments in the future.”
