Second man arrested over Jean McConville IRA murder released

A man arrested on Wednesday by police investigatig the abduction and murder of Jean McConville 42 years ago has been released.

Police said the 56 year-old was arrested in west Belfast on Wednesday and taken to Antrim police station for questioning.

He is the second person to be arrested over the murder in recent weeks.

Mrs McConville, who became known as one of the Disappeared, was a widow and mother of 10 children when she was abducted in December 1972 from her flat in the Divis area of west Belfast and shot by the IRA.

The 37 year-old’s body was recovered on a beach in Co Louth in August 2003.

Last month veteran republican Ivor Bell was charged in connection with the murder. The 77 year-old was released on bail last week.

Police said enquiries are continuing.
