SHOOTING: England’s Charlotte Kerwood looks to Al Maktoum

England’s Charlotte Kerwood is taking the Peter Wilson route towards Commonwealth Games glory - by nabbing the Olympic champion’s coach.

Wilson is not competing at Glasgow 2014 so Al Maktoum has taken Sussex shooter Kerwood under his wing as she bids to add to her tally of three Commonwealth golds in the trap and double trap.

"I've just started working with Ahmed and it's going really well. He's an amazing guy and an amazing coach," the 27-year-old told Press Association Sport.

"We had a training camp in Cyprus in May and that went well. It's just working on little bits. He has a different approach to anyone I've worked with before and he is a very positive man. He makes you feel more confident.

"He's completely nuts as well, so our personalities go together. And he buys dinner! He's a gentleman."

Kerwood won her first Commonwealth gold as a 15-year-old at Manchester in 2002 and bagged two more in Melbourne four years later.

She went into the London Olympics with high hopes of emulating GB team-mate Wilson but failed to reach the final.

However, Kerwood is back on track after winning a World Cup event in the heat of Abu Dhabi in October and now needs to transfer that form to the slightly chillier Dundee coast.

"I'm definitely a warm-weather shooter - I'm the biggest wimp going," she admitted.

"When the sun's out I just feel better - I like the heat. I was definitely born in the wrong country. This isn't quite Abu Dhabi, but it's nice.

"The Commonwealths has been good for me. I think it's the fact that I'm happy here. It's a relaxed atmosphere and not the same pressure as the Olympics, although obviously everyone wants to win.

"I did feel the pressure in London, although it was an amazing experience. I'd have liked to have done better, but it was good experience for Rio in 2016.

"I feel good. But people are saying you are going for your fourth and fifth medals and I hadn't thought of it like that. But I feel relaxed. I'm just going to enjoy it and see what happens."
