Locals in Londonderry are being encouraged to turn up in Guildhall Square and welcome former American President Bill Clinton on Wednesday.

Mayor Cllr Martin Reilly said the visit will be a hugely significant one for the city and urged as many locals as possible to attend the event as President Clinton makes a speech honouring former SDLP leader and Nobel Laureate John Hume.

He said: “I am delighted that the 42nd President of the United States has decided to make a return visit to the city to honour John Hume. It’s a huge accolade for the city and a great opportunity for the public to share in this city celebration.”

The visit will happen between 12.30pm and 1.30pm and include performances by Phil Coulter, the University of Ulster choir and music students.

Those wishing to attend are asked to get there early and bring appropriate clothing for the weather.

The public are warned to expect some minor traffic disruption and delays and are advised to use city centre car parks.
