Soldier is a positive role model

editorial image

AS a positive role model to be respected and looked up to surely the young soldier Philip Gillespie is at the top of the list.

This young man, who in the service of his country suffered horrific injuries, has met the difficulties head on, tackled the problems and is now preparing to take part in a challenging off road rally.

He had options following his injuries.

His approach is one that is an example of direction and focus. As such he has set out to help others who are disabled and to change perceptions and stereotypes of disabled people.

Philip Gillespie stands out among the crowd and deserves support as he and his team-mates tackle the Dakar Rally; acknowledged as one of the toughest endurance events in the world.

Well done Philip. Northern Ireland needs more role models like you and your team to set the standards by which others can be benchmarked.

Councillor Adam Newton DUP
