The first in a major two-part television series of interviews with Ian Paisley will be broadcast on Monday night.

The first film, which has caused a political storm before even being shown by the BBC, is rumoured to be less dramatic than next week’s episode, where Dr Paisley is expected to speak as never before about his departure from the DUP and Free Presbyterian Church leadership.

But the film to be shown tonight, in which veteran journalist Eamonn Mallie interviews the former first minister, includes some startling claims.

Among them is the allegation in relation to the 1974 Dublin-Monaghan bombings that the Irish government “brought that on...themselves”, a view which was repudiated as “dangerous” by Peter Robinson, who succeeded Dr Paisley as First Minister, on Friday.

Speaking at the start of the first programme, Mr Mallie says that the programmes “will reveal dramatic and dark secrets of the DUP” before cutting to a clip of Dr Paisley saying: “The Scriptures tell us that so-called friends are probably secret enemies.”

l Paisley: Genesis To Revelation – Face To Face With Eamonn Mallie, will be shown on BBC1 Northern Ireland at 10.35pm.
