The race took place in Glasgow’s Strathclyde Park and the Northern Irish Team were well supported by the grandstand crowds and those lining the bike and run course.

One of the prerace favourites, Australia looked to be in trouble during the early stages as they were distanced from the leaders and forced into some serious chasing.

Meanwhile at the head of the race Conor Murphy was putting in a strong performance as he kept pace with Commonwealth Silver medallist, Jonny Brownlee over the swim and bike. Onto the run and Jonny stretched his legs clocking a 4:29 mile to give England the lead going into the 3rd leg.

Murphy was holding his own and set Eimear Mullan off for the 3rd leg of the race in 3rd position.

Mullan, a long distance specialist and Ironman winner was caught by the ITU speedsters during the swim bit posted impressive bike and run splits to set U23 Russell White off for the final leg in 6th place.

White put in a strong showing to hold off the challenge from Scotland and Wales behind, crossing the line in an overall time of 1:15:52, 1 minute 33 seconds off the medals.

Triathlon Ireland Technical Director Tommy Evans was pleased with the team’s performance at the Games.

“The whole team put in a great effort and peaked for the race so I’m very pleased with it.”

“We had a lot of young up and coming triathletes racing so it’s good for them to get that major games experience and there is a lot more to come from them in the future.”
