The EU vote should have been recorded as a UK-wide result

It seems to me that a parliament with foresight might have considered some means whereby referendum votes were recorded and counted without reference to the part of the United Kingdom in which they were cast.

Regional comparisons whilst fascinating have not proved helpful to what was always intended to be a UK collective result.

Such a strategy might be logistically difficult to engineer and perhaps costly, but it could have meant less airspace devoted to talk of border polls, vetoes of Brexit and the ridiculous notion of being able to somehow make European Union membership a devolved issue.
