AS a casual observer of local politics it strikes me that the present Ulster Unionist Party is to management/leadership as a wrecking ball is to architecture.
We have seen the departure/removal/censure of Lord Maginnis, Lady Hermon, David McNarry, Trevor Ringland, David McClarty, John McCallister and Basil McCrea.
Then there are the ‘transferers’ to the DUP.
As the UUP moves ever further to the right, it is perhaps time for the birth of a new liberal unionism comprised of some of the above-mentioned people, who would bring a new dynamic to a tired old brand and perhaps recruit new blood to its ranks. Is this the moment when we can truly leave the past behind?
