An online petition has been launched in support of a new anthem for the Northern Ireland football team.

The long-running debate has been re-ignited with more than 200 signatures registered since Wednesday.

NI Conservatives co-chair and former Ireland rugby player Trevor Ringland said he thinks the time could be right for a new anthem.

Currently Northern Ireland’s National Anthem God Save The Queen is played and sung at matches but some have asserted that it is not inclusive enough.

In April a decision was taken not to play God Save the Queen before the Irish Cup final between Cliftonville and Glentoran.

The petition is described as “another step forward in creating a more inclusive environment for all of our players”.
