BY going for a unity candidate in Mid Ulster, the DUP clearly did not want to face the electorate.
They know their policies are unpopular with many unionists.
By agreeing a unity candidate Mr Nesbitt has in effect played along and in so doing has disenfranchised the UUP.
If the UUP had put forward a candidate they would almost certainly have become the largest unionist party in Mid Ulster.
It is a disastrous decision by Mr Nesbitt and does nothing for democracy.
