Twelve men have been arrested after masked men were involved in a Republican Sinn Fein colour party in Lurgan today.

There was a large security presence in the Kilwilkie estate as a group of uniformed and masked men grouped to parade to a new memorial garden erected to commemorate those who died in 1916.

Several announcements made by police regarding illegal public processions were ignored and the masked colour party as well as a republican band from Bellaghy marched through the estate.

Police said tonight that folowing the ‘unnotified parade’ 12 men were arrested on suspicion of offences under the public processions act.

Supt David Moore said: “The arrests were as a result of the subsequent policing operation and concurrent investigation.”

The memorial garden was erected by Republican Sinn Fein on land owned by the NI Housing Executive and without planning permission.

Senior figures including Des Dalton, President of Republican Sinn Fein, attended the event.
