Video: ‘Beating the retreat’ ceremony with the Royal Irish Regiment in Ballymena

Waiting for Video...

Old footage of the hugely popular ‘Beating the Retreat’ ceremony at St Patrick’s Barracks in Ballymena reveals why it reached out to the local community.

Filmed by camera and video enthusiast Sammy McCaig, from the north Antrim town, the footage captures the parade complete with bugles, pipes and drums.

Saint Patrick’s Barracks was once the training depot for the Royal Ulster Rifles, then the Royal Irish Rangers and latterly the Royal Irish Regiment.

The site was closed in 2007 as defence cuts were implemented.

Over the years, the site witnessed thousands of soldiers receive their training - and their ‘passing out’ parades.
