Most people who spoke to the News Letter on the streets yesterday felt uplifted by Rory McIlroy’s latest golf victory.
Declan McAleese from Lurgan said it was “great to see him winning”.
He added: “I went to bed at 11pm and didn’t see the end”.
Marian McStravick from Lurgan said it was “great news”.
Although not a golf fan herself, she sat up until 2am “as the whole house was up”.
She added: “My son and husband were watching so I didn’t have much choice.”
Gerry Caffrey from Belfast said he had been disappointed by Rory’s form in the wake of sponsorship changes and the break-up with his girlfriend.
“But maybe now he can do what he needs to do,” he said. “He has really gone up in my estimation”.
Ryan McCullough from Dungannon said that “getting rid of that girlfriend must have done it for him”.
He added: “I didn’t get to see it as I was working, but it was impressive”.
However Barry Bruce from Portadown disagreed.
“I don’t even follow it,” he said. “It is much too hyped up. Falling out with your girlfriend should not affect your golf.”
And John O’Neill from Craigavon was another who had little interest.
“I don’t follow any sport,” he said. “My interests are gardening, model building, keeping fish, reading and walking.”
